    Vitamin D status in medical students and risk factor analysis: Vitamin D status in medical students

    Vitamin D is finding increasing health implications beyond calcium homeostasis. Vitamin D deficiency is prevalent globally including India. Many asymptomatic individuals have hypovitaminosis implicating the need for intervention. The present study aimed at evaluating vitamin D levels among healthy medical students from southern India and its association with well-known risk factors. Hundred apparently healthy medical students between the age group of 18-25 years were recruited based on defined inclusion and exclusion criteria. A questionnaire form with details of sun exposure, tanning, milk intake, general health and drug history were obtained. Vitamin D levels were assessed by chemiluminescent immunoassay (CLIA). Vitamin D values were considered normal for 30-60 ng/ml, deficient for <20 ng/ml and insufficient for levels between 21-29 ng/ml. Majority of the students (89%) had deficient 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels while 8% of the student had insufficient and 3% of the students had sufficient 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels. The mean 25-hydroxyvitamin D level was 14.01±6.20 ng/ml, median level was 12.95 ng/ml and ranged between 5.15 to 43.01 ng/ml. No statistically significant association was noted with sex, BMI, sun exposure, dietary intake or serum calcium levels. To conclude, vitamin D deficiency is highly prevalent in asymptomatic medical students and showed lack of relationship with the well-defined risk factors in literature prompting to look for newer risk factors in this country

    QoS based Web Service Selection and Multi-Criteria Decision Making Methods

    With the continuing proliferation of web services offering similar efficacies, around the globe, it has become a challenge for a user to select the best web service. In literature, this challenge is exhibited as a 0-1 knapsack problem of multiple dimensions and multiple choices, known as an NP-hard problem. Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) method is one of the ways which suits this problem and helps the users to select the best service based on his/her preferences. In this regard, this paper assists the researchers in two conducts: Firstly, to witness the performance of different MCDM methods for large number of alternatives and attributes. Secondly, to perceive the possible deviation in the ranking obtained from these methods. For carrying out the experimental evaluation, in this paper, five different well-known MCDM methods have been implemented and compared over two different scenarios of 50 as well as 100 web services, where their ranking is defined on an account of several Quality of Service (QoS) parameters. Additionally, a Spearman’s Rank Correlation Coefficient has been calculated for different pairs of MCDM methods in order to provide a clear depiction of MCDM methods showing the least deviation in their ranking. The experimental results comfort web service users in conquering an appropriate decision on the selection of suitable service

    A Simple Polynomial Time Algorithm for Max Cut on Laminar Geometric Intersection Graphs

    In a geometric intersection graph, given a collection of n geometric objects as input, each object corresponds to a vertex and there is an edge between two vertices if and only if the corresponding objects intersect. In this work, we present a somewhat surprising result: a polynomial time algorithm for max cut on laminar geometric intersection graphs. In a laminar geometric intersection graph, if two objects intersect, then one of them will completely lie inside the other. To the best of our knowledge, for max cut this is the first class of (non-trivial) geometric intersection graphs with an exact solution in polynomial time. Our algorithm uses a simple greedy strategy. However, proving its correctness requires non-trivial ideas. Next, we design almost-linear time algorithms (in terms of n) for laminar axis-aligned boxes by combining the properties of laminar objects with vertical ray shooting data structures. Note that the edge-set of the graph is not explicitly given as input; only the n geometric objects are given as input
